The Department of Exercise and Sport Science has three main roles on
Eastern Kentucky University's campus:
-
The department prepares undergraduate students for both teaching and non-teaching
positions in exercise and sport science. Students who are interested in
teaching in the public schools will become certified through the
P-12 Physical Education Teacher Education program.
The three other undergraduate majors are: Athletic Training,
Fitness and Wellness Management, and Sport Management.
-
The department offers a master's degree in physical education with three options:
Exercise and Sport Science, Exercise and Wellness and Sports
Administration.
-
The department offers courses that meet the requirements of the
University's General Education Program. The department teaches
Lifetime Fitness and Wellness which fulfills the three credit requirement in the
Wellness Option (Block VI). The Lifetime Activity Courses (HPR 282/390) offer a
variety of active lifetime leisure skills (golf, tennis, weight lifting) that
are available as electives for students to take.
Also, other areas include: the Coaching Endorsement, Dance Minor (non-teaching),
and a Dance Certification (teaching) programs. These are available to
students from fields of study other than exercise and sport science.
The Department of Exercise and Sport Science is housed in the Moberly building on EKU's Richmond campus, which
was built in 1999. The Exercise and Sport Science is headed by Dr. Jack Rutherford, who
began as department chair in the fall of 2007.
